Magic and Medicine in the Middle Ages / Margate Shell Grotto

 

South East London Folklore Society presents:

12th July: Catherine Rider - Magic and Medicine in the Middle Ages Catherine discusses her research for her Katherine Briggs award winning book Magic and Impotence in the Middle Ages SELFS meet every second Thursday of the month at The Old King's Head, Kings Head Yard, 45-49, Borough High St, London, SE1 1NA. Nearest stations are London Bridge and Borough. It is just off Borough High Street , a map is here. Talks start at 8.00pm £2.50 / £1.50 concessions.There?s no meeting in August, instead come along to the SELFS August Beano to Margate Shell Grotto Email SELFS to reserve your place. Sunday 19th August: catch the 10.32am train to Margate for a picnic on the beach and then tour the famous Margate Shell Grotto at 3pm. How was it discovered? Who built it? It is haunted? Are there any more secrets there? Is it a subterranean Victorian folly or an pagan shrine? A hoax, a mis-understanding or England's most under-rated sacred site?  Entrance is £2.50 with a guided tour. Come and decide for yourself.
