I too have read the novel (Redemption).
(Author is local, so I saw a few reviews/articles in the local press and went to his book signing in Diss- God, he's hot!)
I agree with you Re: the tale. It's a wonderfully dark and taut thriller, with a conclusion that blindsides the reader.
I'm sure that this book would appeal to both fans of the horror and thriller genres.
Reading it was like attending a masterclass in dark psychology... I can't wait for the sequel.
